The Sanatoriums

On the plateau d'Assy, the sanatoriums illustrate the important role architecture played in fighting tuberculosis and outline the necessity of using new materials and techniques.

In answer to the request of the population to fight tuberculosis at the end of the First World War, doctors and architects put their heads together to build one of the largest a sanatorium on the higher plains of Passy, using the climatic conditions to their advantage.

Build to strict geographical guidelines, the sanatoriums were often mentioned in the specialised international press of the 1930s.

These buildings are a witness to the technical and esthetical genius of mountain constructions of the 20th century and provide a reference point for the relationship between man, his habitat and his environment.
