As part of 2023, the year of sculpture in Passy, return to 1973 to discover the event "Sculptures in the mountains, a poem in space": a fabulous artistic and human adventure which contributed to starting the road of contemporary sculpture.
In 1973, the Plateau d'Assy, under the impetus of the poet Jean Pierre Lemesle and a group of artists including Artigas, Chavignier and then Semser, fell under the spell of this place and embarked on a fabulous project with the firm intention of bringing art to the mountains. Their energy and the support of local personalities, elected officials and directors of the sanatoriums enabled the creation of an exhibition of open-air sculptures with the poems of Jean Pierre Lemesle as a filigree.
This event also contributed to the revival of the tourist dynamic after the conversion of the sanatoriums into medical establishments.
The commitment of the participants and their desire to bring art into life led to the emergence of a collective work of art by 23 artists, consisting of 30 sculptures on 4 routes.
At the end of the 1973 event, 5 sculptures remained on the territory, those of Semser, Gardy Artigas, Calder, Féraud and Gardenas. Other works, thanks to the successive commitments of the elected representatives, found their place from the banks of the Arve to the Lac Vert. It is this artistic adventure and the works of the sculptors that the Savoie Mont-Blanc Heritage Guides of Passy will present to you during the visits this summer.
